Mongolia to adopt European standards

Mongolia’s Prime Minister S. Batbold announced the will to introduce European standards in all spheres of the Mongolian society.
Accordingly, the Premier received this Monday Yoshiteru Uramoto, Deputy Director-General of the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and concluded an agreement with the UNIDO to cooperate in implementing the necessary policies.
S Batbold noted that UNIDO’s research into Mongolia’s industrial policy carried out in the early 90s had yielded a vital effect to the development of the nation. He continued saying he pays a lot of attention to the ways the neighbouring Republic of Kazakhstan is introducing European standards in all its activity sectors with the assistance of the UNIDO as he is also willing to do the same in Mongolia.
Standards are a proven business facilitator and Mongolia’s adoption of European standards would be expected to boost the country’s economy by increasing consumer confidence nationally and internationally and lower production costs. Moreover, by adopting European Standards, Mongolia – a country whose economy mainly relies on the export of raw commodities - will facilitate its trading and business activity with members of the Euro zone and other nations adhering to the same Standards as well as accentuate the span of its trading partners.
Mr Uramoto has introduced the Premier to the progress of the UNIDO’s research on the development of Mongolia’s industrialization, underlining the importance of the Standards issues. With respect to the proposal, the UNIDO has decided to render assistance to Mongolia to raise drilling standards to those of the European Union. Furthermore, both sides have agreed to actively cooperate to accumulate the capital needed to realize the Mongolia-UNIDO joint program on technical cooperation established in 2006.
While the use of standards remains voluntary, the European Union has, since the mid-1980s, made an increasing use of standards in support of its policies and legislation. Standardisation is the voluntary process of developing technical specifications based on consensus among all interested parties (industry including Small and Medium-sized Enterprises, consumers, trade unions, environmental Non Governmental Organisations, public authorities ...). It is carried out by independent standards bodies, acting at national, European and international level.
