The Government gave last weekend the Director of Nuclear Energy Authorities and officials of MonAtom 24 hours to submit a report on why 12 licences in Mardai uranium deposit had been issued in violation of the law and had yet to be cancelled. Nevertheless, it now seems the licences are to be regularized.

According to a briefing by Ch. Khurelbaatar, Director of the Government Office, it was decided that all the licenses in Mardai issued apparently illegally but re-registered after December 15 will be regularized. A working group will be in charge of regularizing the licenses in conformity with the law.

During the briefing, it was also said that the Government meeting on Thursday heard the report of the Director of the Nuclear Energy Authority on several issues in the uranium sector, including how licenses were issued and how foreign license holders had been selling their shares.

With respect to this matter, Mongolia’s Government has decided to advertise the nuclear law and its provisions so that companies in Mongolia and abroad clearly know what they can or cannot do.

Among the main concerns is the fact that companies are not to sell or transfer more than five percent of their shares without permission from the Nuclear Energy Authority, and the Government’s decision to hold at least 51 percent ownership of all uranium deposits.
