A team representing the citizens of Khongor soum in the Darkhan-Uul province and the head of Mongolian National Green Movement A. Saruul have accused this Tuesday the Government of cover up in a case of environmental pollution endangering the life of the soum’s resident.

The representatives and A. Sarull affirm that officials concealed the World Health Organization (WHO) report on the extent of toxicity in the soum where chemicals such as cyanide were found in the soil.

They believe that the soum’s abnormal level of stillbirths, skin diseases, and other unusual complaints – for which no explanation has been formally given so far – is link to the toxicity in its soil, an information which would have been mastermindly covered up by several governmental and WHO Mongolians officials.

Reassuringly, some WHO analysts asserted civil representatives at the soum on Friday that Khongor was not “as” poisoned with mercury as were Bornuur and Zaamar for example.Nevertheless, they confirmed the soum’s toxicity and the presence of chemicals in the soil such as arsenic, cadmium and mercury at levels wide-ranging from 0.5 to 24.5 times over the tolerable amount.

The analysts said they had recommended action to reduce the toxic level and protect residents.

According to the soum’s citizens’ representatives, the soil pollution level there may be responsible for the death of 60 people, the miscarriages of many women, and the possibility of cancer contraction for many residents, from babies to old people.

In order to save the lives of the 2,300 residents of Khongor soum, the representatives demanded that the illegal court decisions related to the soum be invalidated and its inhabitants relocated to safe areas with pure water, while all afflicted people be provided with proper medical care
